The Dress Still Hangs in My Closet

I was wearing my favorite dress.

An Akris Punto. White with green accents. Fitted. Elegant. I felt strong in it. Like myself again.

I was at a leadership conference in Texas. Just finished breakfast. And then something shifted.

My left breast, the one treated for cancer, started swelling. Fast. Within minutes, it tripled in size.

I was rushed to the ER. My blood pressure dropped. I could barely keep my eyes open.

A nurse said, "We may have to cut off your dress."

Even in that moment, I joked, "Please don't. That dress was an investment."

I unzipped it myself.

And my breast exploded.

Blood everywhere.

It was not a dramatic moment. It was simply a fight to stay alive.

Later I learned radiation had weakened my skin. The pressure caused a rupture.

That dress, soaked in blood, went home with my husband. He soaked it in the hotel bathtub. Scrubbed for hours. And saved it.

It still hangs in my closet.

I wore it again for my book photo.

Because it is not just a dress. It is a symbol of survival.

Some scars do not show up on your skin. Some explosions happen quietly inside us. And sometimes leadership looks like grace in pain.

I do not share this for shock value. I share it for anyone who is bleeding quietly. Still showing up. Still leading. Still holding it together.

To you, I say.

You are not your pain.

You are still here.

And that makes you powerful.
